I was fortunate enough to take Carlos’ Shakespeare class, and wow, did it change my life. Shakespearean text initially felt completely foreign to me, but after Professor Tesoro explained a few key technical aspects of performing the text, everything suddenly clicked. I would begin working on a monologue, and sometimes, without even having read the play, Professor Tesoro would identify important details and insights that I had completely missed, which would transform my performance and bring my character to life.
His approach to acting is simple, human, and rooted in play. In a Carlos class, you learn the importance of getting up on your feet to get into the material. He helps you put the tools like imagery and epithets and assonance into your voice and body which is incredibly important with such heightened text. He pushes you to match the height of the text by pushing you to bring a fulfilled energy only you can bring and working with you to individualize your performance. If Shakespeare has never felt personal or attainable to you, take a Carlos class.
